A bride in white linen walks through a field of snares and thorny brush along a path of light, her gaze fixed on a verdant/fruiting apple tree and a bright land beyond the hedges. To the left and right of the scene are various thorny plants in autumnal senescence/abscission: hawthorns, berberis, hollies; and blackberries. Thorny obstacles aside, fowlers and hunters have made trouble for the crossing; prepping their nets and snares in sight of the bird's eye of the viewer and left in hidden anticipation. A craftsman's fallen evergreen tree divides the field and sits occupied with a litmus of lichens. Strewn throughout the entire scene are white lily of the valley and crown anemone, unexpectedly also dressed in the full bloom of spring.
The bride represents true faith. The thorny plants, their fruits, and evergreens represent false systems and distractions with their impastoed points of foliage meant to visually emphasize a surroundedness and thornlike reproach. The nets and snares symbolize the ways of fowlers making a prey of more than birds, hinds, and harts. The apple tree and the land of light beyond the hedges represents the promise of God the Lord Jesus Christ not just to love and sustain us, but to grow up those whom He planted, those made to fruit/bloom even in thorny places, and promises to gather in season.
